Halloween ... Alaska Bush Style

We arrived in Hooper Bay, Alaska on Halloween just in time to see the festivities. Much like home in North Carolina, the children go house to house collecting huge bags of candy. But here in rural Alaska, make their rounds in the snowy, cold weather by ATV.....or 'Hondas' as they are known in the villages, regardless of actual brand.

Most of the little goblins had painted faces. It was a treat to see the creativity that can be subdued by the availability fancy store-bought costumes that are more common at home. Winter gear made up the rest of the costume!

Seeing entire families balanced on their Honda, bumping down the snowy roads was a delight.

Three of us wandering through town enjoying the festivities. The people of Hooper Bay were warm, friendly and gracious to the gaggle of obvious strangers lolling about. The kids came out from their houses and brought us candy just to meet us!
